Lighting in university settings has to accommodate a diverse array of needs – from focused individual study to dynamic group collaboration, from lectures to research, and from social interaction to relaxation. Designing lighting for higher education environments requires a nuanced understanding of how light affects visual performance, cognitive function and psychological comfort across various spaces and user requirements.

In academic environments, good lighting is not just about achieving recommended lux levels – it's about enhancing the learning experience. It has been proven that well-lit rooms can enhance concentration, reduce fatigue and support the body clock, especially in facilities used for extended or irregular hours. Integrating natural daylight, glare control and visual comfort is crucial, particularly in classrooms, libraries and laboratories, where sustained attention is essential.
