Brands. Stories. Emotions.
How to renovate? How to modernise? How to decarbonise? Zumtobel Licht AG takes care of every single light fitting at AMAG Autowelt Zurich.
What do the car brands VW, Audi, Seat, Škoda, Cupra and VW Commercial Vehicles have in common? They are all showcased to their best advantage at AMAG Autowelt Zurich. Brilliant yet resource-efficient, as the lighting has just been upgraded. With this, the AMAG Group is taking another step forward in its climate strategy under the motto ‘reduce, invest and eliminate’ – with the aim of reducing its Scope 1, 2 and 3 CO₂ emissions by 90 per cent by 2040.
Not all refurbishments are the same. Especially not in a car showroom. And certainly not in a car showroom that sells vehicles from multiple brands. After all, every brand has a distinctive image that must be reflected in the presentation of its products. Dirk Postel describes these challenges from the perspective of a Zumtobel lighting designer: “Every car brand tells its own story. The lighting must conceptually support this story and enrich it emotionally. The right light thus contributes to sales support.” The effectiveness of the light is also the focus of lighting design during a refurbishment. Each of the 5,500 light points in the AMAG Autowelt was evaluated, replaced with a suitable LED luminaire or refurbished using an LED retrofit kit.
Each of the six car brands features not only impressive showrooms but also prestigious reception areas, comfortable waiting areas, and consultation and sales offices. In addition, there are almost 100 workshop bays with a spare parts warehouse, a paint shop, car wash stations and extensive parking areas, as well as an administrative area with a canteen for the approximately 200 employees. This variety of spaces presents a wide range of lighting challenges. The appropriate refurbishment solution was largely found within the extensive product range of sister brands Zumtobel and Thorn. Special lighting features, such as the illuminated ceiling, were refurbished using a bespoke solution.
Volkswagen
Now that all the downlights, linear lights and office lights have been replaced on a one-for-one basis, the premises look very welcoming and bright.
Cupra
The young brand focuses on making a bold statement and, following the lighting refurbishment, scores highly with an additional sustainability feature.
“The upgraded lighting system is helping us to achieve our climate and decarbonisation targets. We’re saving energy and, what’s more, we’re receiving a lot of positive feedback on the quality of the light.”

Custom-made features such as a (now refurbished) CIELUMA illuminated ceiling turn the handover of a new car into an experience.
Škoda
The Škoda slogan ‘Simply Clever’ is also a perfect fit for the refurbishment: only the internal components of the lighting strips were replaced, whilst the downlights were swapped out one-for-one without any structural alterations.
Zumtobel Licht AG not only provided lighting design and luminaires, but also, in its role as main contractor, took responsibility for the project’s implementation. “We were looking for a partner who could offer us comprehensive project management, from the start of operations through to the preparation of quotations for materials and electrical installations, right through to the execution phase and handover of the facility,” says Mathieu Unternährer, outlining the client’s requirements. For Marijan Sesar, the Zumtobel sales representative responsible for the project, the advantages of a comprehensive package are clear: “When we take on the general contractor role, the client really doesn’t have to worry about a thing. They get everything from a single source.”
New light, new effect
WE CARE ABOUT
The Swiss electrical contractor Steinlin + Partner AG was commissioned to carry out the refurbishment. Branch manager Sandro Micaletti still remembers clearly what the AMAG premises looked like before the lighting refurbishment: “Despite the 5,500 light points, the showrooms didn’t seem particularly bright. In the workshops, the mechanics complained about there not being enough light. The refurbishment brought about a significant improvement.” With the modern LED luminaires and LED inserts, the quality of light was considerably optimised, whilst maintaining the same number of luminaires. “They enhance the building. The new reflectors and the new LED technology bring out colours and shapes much better. And the feedback from AMAG confirms that the refurbishment has been a great success,” says the electrician, praising the result.
The client is also very satisfied – both with the refurbishment solution and with the support provided by the team at Zumtobel Licht AG. So satisfied, in fact, that Zumtobel will be carrying out sustainable lighting refurbishments at further Swiss sites of the AMAG Group in the coming years.
